I shall observe the tenets of Tae Kwon Do -- Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, Indomitable Spirit
I have incorporated the tenets into my personal and professional life. I have learned that nothing comes easily. I have had to work for everything I have attained. I also know that a lot of things that occur are not life threatening. So using that philosophy, I have discovered it is easier to be patient and courteous and do my best at things I attempt.
I shall respect my instructors and seniors.
I respect the dedication it takes to become and instructor in the martial arts. I realize it takes years of physical and mental conditioning to be decent in the craft. But to excel in a chosen field is an extremely significant accomplishment and one to be admired.
I shall never misuse Tae Kwon Do.
The pursuit of martial arts is a continuing study of discipline and knowledge. Discipline affords one the ability to control physical abilities. The potential to inflict bodily harm is there, but the discipline permits one to control the aggression. Knowledge of one's capabilities permits one to walk away from problem situations before they escalate.
I will be a champion of freedom and justice.
Freedom can be something as simple as helping someone cross the street. Being outside four walls in the fresh air and sunshine is all the freedom someone may need. Freedom can also be defined as what is being fought to to preserve in the world today. Is justice bringing an offender to trial or is it enabling the underdog to finally achieve a life long dream of a college education? Justice is helping one maintain integrity in a questionable situation.
I will build a more peaceful world.
I have learned to
prevent conflict through words and nonverbal behavior. I am not afraid of
conflict or confrontation, however, I have become adept at choosing battles.
My hope is that if only one person observes how I handle a questionable situation
and adopts some of the positive strategies to avoid a battle, I will have
brought the world one step closer to peace.
